Pew Internet & American Life Project conducted a survey in 2007 asking people how they searched for health information online. What did they find? 113 million adults use search engine to get health information online, that is 80% of all Internet users. 64% are looking for a specific disease or medical problem and 51% are looking for a certain medical treatment.

Do you think they found what they wanted? Maybe. Do you think they found what they needed? True, up-to-date, factual information? Not likely. There is a lot of junk on the Internet, and people believe that junk because they do not have access to quality health content. Especially on a local or regional level. True WebMd and RevolutionHealth both offer good information, but they are disconnected from your patients or potential patients. They can provide general information, but they cannot provide quality, specific information that can be provided by your hospital and a quality health library. Hospital web sites need a strong health library, to allow them to be the thought-leaders in their community. To be the experts on a specific disease or condition, and to show their community that the hospital down the street from them is just as smart and forward thinking as a WebMd. An online health library, that is strategically integrated on your site can do this.

Let your hospital be the health information leader for your community by developing a quality web site, with great content.
